Cleaning out my Aunt Polly's house has been interesting. I have learned that holding on to alot of stuff is crazy because the person who has to clean out when you die is just going to throw it out or donate it.
I am keeping a few select pieces of furniture and knick knacks for myself and mom. The dishes and lastic containers have all been throw away. The closets and dressers have all been cleaned out. I am ready to just get a dumpster and be done with this part of my journey.
As a photographer the worst part has been seeing all the photos of people I don't know. I have to big boxes of loose photos for mom to go through and about 20 (maybe 30) photo albums. There were papers and old bills that went back to 1934. Yep I saved a couple just to look at later but will throw away at some point.
Some people may think it's taking me too long to do this but I am doing it alone. I don't have a big strong guy to help me move heavy furniture or help with the heavy garbage. Mom and I took all the donation bags of clothes off to Hospice thrift and the woman couldn't believe the amount of bags.
I am hoping the person who said they would buy the house as is still will because I am ready to be done with it. The house holds alot of great memories for me and I always hoped one day it would be mine but it has to be sold to pay Medicaid of SC back.
Cleaning out my Aunt's house has prepared me for cleaning out moms house for sure. It's something about that generation and holding on to stuff.
